Aracy wrote begging that her mother send her a coat and a pair of wool socks that aunt Marieta had promised. It isn't even winter yet, but Curitiba lies under a constant, freezing mist. How can anyone want to live in a place like that? Here in BH it's already quite chilly, but sunny, which is why I love this May weather, when there's sun to warm the body against the slightest cold — even a pleasant one — that the wind can bring.

She said that, recently, she spent some days in terrible pain from a bout of colitis and, as if it weren't already the worst possible moment for that to happen, she also had to stop working. There you see how we get no peace even in the hour of sickness. She fell into debt paying for all the paraphernalia of the cure and now can't even buy a coat to face the absurd cold. Thank God she's better already; it's only that mother gets into a fluster when these letters arrive, she frets, wanting to help at any cost, any cost at all. In the end, the long distance and the short money don't cooperate even with those willing to pay any price.

Along with the letter came a Mother's Day card and a portrait of Aracy. My God, how stern she is. If this were here in Minas, she would surely leave the photographer disconcerted by so much fierceness. The body turned toward the right corner of the photo, a gaze-enigma with a rectilinear shape and a curved spirit, for it aims at something placed right at the level and in the direction of the eyes, while at the same time it seems to look backward and also toward nowhere. In short, a tired gaze. Look here at my hand, the photographer may have said, snapping his fingers. If we look closely, a hand the gaze disdains yet decides to follow only with the intention of defining a point through which to pass and, at last, suspend itself in flight toward a place so incomprehensible that I don't even know whether I should call it by that name. There was also a request that mother send a photo. It's true that a long time has passed since they last saw each other, and Aracy is terribly afraid of forgetting what her mother's face looks like, she who also cannot recall her own mother's smile, because photographs were a rarity in the time when she was alive.

Hudson keeps sending Aracy some money until she manages to get settled in Curitiba. The trouble is that she's already been there a few years and still hasn't built up a clientele. Since she was always so dedicated, my guess is that the problem lies with the people of Curitiba. Hudson is always busy and rarely uses his spare time to write to her, who, in every letter she sends here, addressed to whomever it may be, says she is dying of longing for her brother. He's been working a great deal and, next week, will sit the civil-service exam for the DCT¹, but when he isn't working or studying, he's surely holed up in some gafieira on Itapecerica, the same street where Roberto's antique shop stands, where we met, Aracy's letters and I. I hope the sambas of Curitiba are as good as the ones here.

All we know about the father is that he's alive, that he lent her money for the down payment on an apartment, and that they fight a lot, he and Antônia. They fight so much that we can't tell whether one came before the other or whether they happened at the same time. It's remarkable that the fighting has been taken on as a procedure indispensable to the continuation of love. Aracy agrees and says she even misses it. How can anyone miss a thing like that? That must have been her intention when she chose to live so far away. To feel longing, to soothe the fear that appears before the interval, the abyss, the mystery of not knowing, keeping herself complicit with the risk of wandering. Distance is a device for the permanence of desire, but it can also be desire itself. The encounter is a contrivance for the invention of memory, but also memory itself. It is interval at the same time as it is encounter, intersection, and confluence. Sometimes in dimensions so microscopic that it comes to belong to the territory of fantasy. What is a coincidence if not a synthetic² way of describing things that do not want to be explained? There are times when the coincidence is so strange that we can't even call it that, so we turn to the divine, whether from below or from above — either it's a miracle or it's a haunting! To relate to the mystery, on the other hand, may be first to respect it as untamable, as insoluble. And with that, to transfer the ferocious impulse to describe what will not allow itself to be described into experiments with fantastic happenings, since that is how I recognize them: because they act upon me, deterritorializing desire, proliferating its connections, making it pass through other intensities.³

To look at the floor of a warehouse, to be drawn to a bundle of letters on the verge of falling apart and to want to save them. To take them home and, at last, to read with the eager curiosity of someone who has just received a letter — but isn't that what happened? To visit house number 136 on Joaquim Felício street, without yet understanding why the name was familiar. Months later, while organizing the collections of old papers, to reread the letters and discover that the house I visited stands next to number 150 on Joaquim Felício street, where Aracy's letters were sent, letters that ended up in a warehouse on Itapecerica street and now sit in the drawer of the house that was being organized that very day. The same drawer where, in the middle of the collection of anonymous documents, I found a registration form in the name of Udson Fonseca, missing an H that chose not to attend the celebration but was not missed either. More than a sequence, a tangle of visible happenings that astonish because they are enchanted with the im-probability longed for in games of betting. But coincidence is not a word that comes from inside this organism that dances dizzyingly with time. Formed by fractal interactions on the micro and the macro scale⁴, so multiple and undefinable that they grant it a disposition of its own to stage a material very hard to describe, of the texture of the real, the inexplicable that we have agreed to treat as coincidence but that concerns an approximation so radical — from magnification to the absurd⁵ of an I-don't-know-what of things — that it strips us of the capacity to distinguish and to name. What I saw, I saw so close up that I do not know what I saw.⁶ Material that shares a substance with these mysteries of experience, and so it stages fantastic coincidences in the visible world. To weave them into the enigma of oneself as a way of elaborating the mystery of everyone, a way of calming our ferocious impulse, that scientific compulsion to try to describe things that have no relation to the representative use of language, of gestures, of images. Like the figures printed on cave paintings and on pre-colonial objects, abstractions formulated in an intimate relation with mystery, and so it does not squander itself in an endless search for the absolute reproduction of things. To approach the cosmos without expecting it to reveal itself as absolute, to hesitate, enduring the agony of indefinition so that enchantment may feel invited to enter and to stay. To learn through the grammars of enchantment which, being more intimate with the strangeness of reality⁷, are also more attunable. Not because they are banal or ordinary — if that is even an insult —, but because they exist in relation with the cosmic content that makes scientific categorizations lose their meaning, just as the distinction between times does. They say "we are of the earth," instead of saying "the earth is mine."⁸ And they don't only say it, for they constitute themselves in the act.

Tangled happenings, rubbed against one another in intra-relation, reverberating in intensities, in pockets of entropy and microscopic disorganization of life — points that institute memory — in which multiple temporalities articulate themselves to invent an other time through which memory happens and realizes itself in becoming.⁹ Among cities, neighborhoods, streets, houses, letters, rivers, seas, waters. Without gestures, searching for sounds; without sounds, searching for images; without images, searching for words, which are also images. So to draw time, to give it an image, is an exercise akin to extracting all meaning from words, keeping of it only a paper silhouette¹⁰. That is why the image of time can resemble that of memory, that of desire. It can be a circle, a tangle of lines of flight — from meaning, a dark hole, a spiral, like a whirlpool or a great swell spreading over the sand, carrying the red feather of a lovely Guará¹¹ into a puddle of water in the warehouse on Itapecerica street. It can be something submerged in water, altering what surrounds it, the way my space-time was redrawn by the letters and the houses. That is why water, in its radical indefinition, in mutual and microscopic affectation with the places it passes through, is a time machine, a machine for making time¹². An eternal current in entropy, where the natural disorganization of things, with its infinity of diverse arrangements that our unfocused sight does not distinguish, makes the past and the future disappear¹³. It runs through the Arrudas, reaches the Velhas, and ends in the São Francisco, where the Paraopeba also flows, which is where the Camapuã arrives, which passes through Entre Rios de Minas and continues to the São Francisco, which ends and begins in the sea and receives the Paraná river, where the Iguaçu arrives, already mingled with the Belém, after crossing Curitiba.

That is why I can't say whether it was before or after, but in 2024, when I had already been keeping the letters for a few months and was looking for a new place to live, I visited house number 136 on Joaquim Felício street, which stands immediately beside house number 150, where Hudson and Antônia live. I can already list some things the houses share: the sidewalk, the wall that separates them, a few trees that disobey the boundary of the lots, and a relation with some cosmic content that is common to me. Out front, a tree that arrived there long before the city existed, and in the back, a very large mulberry tree. Although I gave up on living in the house because I was warned it is haunted, had I realized at the time that Hudson and Antônia lived right next door, I would have given up all the same. Having friends in the neighborhood changes everything, especially in cases like this. I think of the afternoons eating mulberries while we read the letters. Since the last one, mother has been anxious because Aracy suggested that they make use of her trip to Rio, when she'll register her diploma, to go together to São Thiago. She also said that a series of murders of students has been happening there, which confirms our suspicions that the repression of students by conservative governments is far more violent than one imagines, and that information like this barely reaches us here because João Magalhães and Ney Braga — no offense to the flour — are flour from the same sack. In Ipatinga, Magalhães has just murdered a group of Usiminas workers who were on strike, among them a woman with her daughter, still a baby. I can't think of a way to justify cruelty except when it happens in reaction to an earlier cruelty as cynically unjustified as this one. Aracy does well to avoid speaking of the murderers; besides being dispensable to the meaning, it doesn't hurt to be careful when one knows that the letter's transit is in the charge of two authoritarian states. To top it off, Claret still works at the United States embassy, a faithful collaborator of those who have been directing these atrocities in various parts of the country. That is why Aracy avoids unfolding the subject too far and gives preference to everyday matters, as it should be, especially since these are already too complex to fit into speech, let alone onto paper. It's all nothing but a heap of SHIT, she wrote at the end of the letter written on July 23, 1963.

A resigned cry, though full of rage, an intensive state of language, of writing¹⁴ that — through the letter it fears will be intercepted by the enemy — communicates the pain to the woman who made Aracy exist even before she was born. My mother, is life worth being lived? And so she casts into her mother's lap the primordial doubt, nourished by the anguished hope of one who decides to bet her last chips because she knows she stands before the only source capable of offering her a comforting answer, though she remembers to consider that perhaps this won't happen. And so she writes, writes, writes, without a map, but trying to find paths within the limit in abyss. She experiments with the vertiginous movements of time through the fantastic coincidences they produce and, with that, draws near to being-world. She strains the facts only until they reach a radical, strange realism¹⁵. But above all, she wishes that, one of these days, everyone will be well.¹⁶
